Nightly Skin Care Rituals

I was recently contacted by Home Shopping Network and they wanted me to check out their new page and blog. It’s great to see new resources like this because people really want places to go to learn about skin care and new products but there’s not enough companies offering good advice that’s up-to-date. People are interested in skin now more than ever and I was super-excited to see HSN’s new page and blog was on skin care. You can find their new page at Skin care Product for Women at HSN

They asked me to check out their upcoming blog post also and the blog is going to cover topics related to skincare. The upcoming blog post is on "4 Overnight Beauty Products You Should be Using" and can be found at http://community.hsn.com/t5/HSN-Blogs/4-Overnight-Beauty-Products-You-Should-be-Using/ba-p/539738.

After reviewing their new page and blog post, I did give my opinion which was just that, everyone’s nightly routine and products should be geared towards their skin type and skin concerns. Not everyone should be doing the same thing or using the same products. They appreciated my constructive criticism and asked to see my take on the subject.

HSN has asked me to do a tag off of their blog post and do my own version. This blog post, which will also include a video post, is my version of their topic. My version of the topic would be Nightly Skin Care Rituals.

Your nightly skin care routine, once established almost becomes a ritual. It’s something you do each night for your skin and once you have your ritual down, shouldn’t take longer than 5 minutes.

Products Just For At Night?

During the day, your products are geared towards protecting your skin and controlling any concerns. We use products such as sunscreen that protect and prevent. Our daytime products also control things like water-loss, excessive oiliness or breakouts.

The products we use at night should have a different purpose. These products purpose should be to treat your skin. The products should repair and also help aid the natural process of the body that occurs at night while you’re sleeping.

Sleep and Our Skin

Sleep enables the body to reverse everyday damage through cellular renewal. While you’re sleeping, your body naturally enhances its ability to fight environmental and natural damage, which gives you a better and brighter complexion. Sleep reduces cortisol (the stress hormone), which causes our skin to thin and causes discoloration. Sleep also increases melatonin (the sleep hormone), which fights age spots, fine lines and skin cancer. Getting a good night’s sleep can also increase the special growth hormones that repair and regenerate collagen-producing cells which help with elasticity and tightness.

There are many treatments that can be done to help with skin conditions or concerns or even just to keep your skin balanced. Many of these treatments are filled with ingredients that are productive or reactive. A large number of these products are used at night because the ingredients can make you photosensitive.

When an ingredient is photosensitive, that means that it leaves your skin sensitive to the sun. If these ingredients are worn during the daytime, it can lead to burns, hyperpigmentation (dark spots) and hypopigmentation (loss of melanin – white spots).

Everyone’s night time ritual is different because we all have different skin types and many of us have different skin concerns. The steps for a night ritual are outlined below. However, I did set up links immediately following to a night ritual specifically for each skin type and some of the most common skin concerns. For more information on specific products, ingredients and treatments for these, just click on the link.

Night Ritual Step-By-Step

Cleanse

Cleansing is important to do both in the morning and at night. It will remove all the dirt, oil and debris. During the day our skin deals with environmental pollutants in the air which we need to cleanse away. We also need to rid our skin of our cosmetics, such as sunblock and our waterproof makeup.

Cleanse your face twice. This is called a double-cleanse. Our skin’s naturally sticky sebum is thick, slick, waxy and coats our skin by the middle of the day. 20 seconds can’t get through a layer of oil-based debris on the surface. The sebum is going to stay on the skin preventing our skin care products from doing their job. A cleanse is going to emulsify the debris, dirt and oil on our face but not truly take it off. This is why a double-cleanse is necessary. This is your secret to ultra, healthy, beautiful, clean skin.

Just use your fingers to massage the cleanser onto your face, neck and décolleté. Then rinse it off with warm water. Pat your face dry with a towel. Do this twice to get a clean face.

Tone

Use a toner to balance the PH of your skin before treating it. Products will penetrate at their fullest this way. It will prepare for maximum product absorption. It would take your skin 20 minutes to do this on its own. A toner helps the skin to do this in seconds.

Put the toner on a cotton pad and wipe on entire face, neck and décolleté. Some toners come in a spray bottle for easier application.

Treat

For this step you are going to be using a treatment meant for your skin type or concern. These products come in different forms. The most common will be creams, serums and masks.

Masks are only typically done a couple times a week. If using a mask, use a toner after this step to balance the PH of your skin again and to prepare for proper moisture absorption.

Serums and creams are applied and left on and many of them are targeted and can be really potent.

Moisturize

Your moisturizer you’re using at night should be different than the one used during the day. The moisturizer used in your night ritual should be geared towards your skin type or for your skin concerns. These night time moisturizers can hold all sorts of great ingredients to further treat your skin. These moisturizers can hydrate, balance, maintain, help control oil production, increase cell turnover or desensitize, among other things. Choose one that fits your specific skin needs. If you have a skin concern, use a moisturizer that treats that specifically.

Eye Creams/Eye Treatments

An eye cream is an essential part of our skin care routine because that area of skin is different than the skin on the rest of our face. The skin on the eyes is a quarter of an inch thinner then on the rest of the face. This skin tends to become dry easier because of the lack of oil glands. This area also needs special products designed especially for that delicate area and it’s never too early to use an eye cream. This area is where we first start to see the signs of aging.

Our treatments that are meant for our face are not meant for the eye area. The ingredients have been measured for the skin on the face, not the thin skin on our eyes. The skin around our eyes needs a lower percentage of ingredients. Using a product on the eye area that's meant to treat the face can cause the eye area to dry out, swell or can even burn the skin in some cases.

Choose an eye cream that hydrates, moisturizes, decreases puffiness, has antioxidants or treats fine lines and wrinkles depending on your specific need.

Product Directions

Always be sure that you have read, understand and follow the product recommendations and directions the manufacturer has outlined for your product. If the product states to use it at night, only use it at night. Not following the directions and specifications can cause damage to your skin.

Your nightly ritual is a great opportunity to use products that give you great results and will help you achieve your skin care goals. There are so many great products with amazing ingredients on the market currently. There are so many benefits to be had and taking a few minutes each night can make a huge difference in the health of your skin.
