Night Ritual For Oily Skin Types

The nightly ritual for oily skin is going to be geared towards creating healthy, clear skin that’s free of shine, blackheads and clogged pores. Products should normalize oil production, tighten pores, targeting sebum oxidation and cellular debris.

Cleanse

Cleansing is important to do both in the morning and at night. It will remove all the dirt, oil and debris. During the day our skin deals with environmental pollutants in the air which we need to cleanse away. We also need to rid our skin of our cosmetics, such as sunblock and our waterproof makeup.

Cleanse your face twice. This is called a double-cleanse. Our skin’s naturally sticky sebum is thick, slick, waxy and coats our skin by the middle of the day. 20 seconds can’t get through a layer of oil-based debris on the surface. The sebum is going to stay on the skin preventing our skin care products from doing their job. A cleanse is going to emulsify the debris, dirt and oil on our face but not truly take it off. This is why a double-cleanse is necessary. This is your secret to ultra, healthy, beautiful, clean skin.

For oily skin, use a cleanser that provides a deep cleanse and purifies oily skin such as a clay formula or a foaming cleanser.  Your cleanser should remove excess oils and refine the skin’s texture. A cleanser with an AHA will also exfoliate while cleansing. Oily skin needs to be exfoliated more often so having this helper in your cleanser is a bonus.

Just use your fingers to massage the cleanser onto your face, neck and decolette. Then rinse with warm water and pat dry with a towel. Do this twice.

Tone

Use a toner to balance the PH of your skin before treating it. Products will penetrate at their fullest this way.

For oily skin types use a toner that will eliminate excess oil and restore balance. The toner should purify without drying or irritating and it should tighten pores.

Put the toner on a cotton pad and wipe on entire face, neck and décolleté. There are also toners that come in a spray bottle for easier application.

Treat

For oily skin focus on a treatment that will exfoliate and get rid of oil. Oily skin tends to break out more often because of the oil build-up clogging the pores. Use a treatment with Salicylic Acid. This eats oil and exfoliates. It gets inside the pores and clears oil as well as exfoliating. A mixture of Glycolic and Salicylic would be perfect because the Glycolic will help other ingredients penetrate. Other great ingredients would be oil-absorbing clays which will help detoxify skin.

You’ll find these treatments come in a couple different forms. These come in serums, creams and masks. I would use a serum each night and then a mask twice a week.

If using a mask, always be sure to use your toner once more to balance the PH balance and prepare the skin for proper product absorption. Then follow that with your serum and go to the next step.

Serums: Murad Blackhead and Pore Clearing Duo or Murad T-Zone Refining Serum

Moisturize

For oily skin use a moisturizer that is feather-light, helps reduce shine and regulates oil production. Look for a moisturizer that has Salicylic Acid to eliminate oil and congestion. Retinol is also an ingredient to look for. Both Salicylic and Retinol will encourage cell turnover.

Using fingers, apply to entire face, neck and décolleté.

Eye Treatment

An eye cream is an essential part of our skin care routine because that area of skin is different than the skin on the rest of our face. The skin on the eyes is a quarter of an inch thinner then on the rest of the face. This skin tends to become dry easier because of the lack of oil glands. This area also needs special products designed especially for that delicate area and it’s never too early to use an eye cream. This area is where we first start to see the signs of aging.

Our treatments that are meant for our face are not meant for the eye area. The ingredients have been measured for the skin on the face, not the thin skin on our eyes. The skin around our eyes needs a lower percentage of ingredients. Using a product on the eye area that's meant to treat the face can cause the eye area to dry out, swell or can even burn the skin in some cases.

Choose an eye cream that targets dehydration. Look for an eye cream to increase elasticity, smooth texture and repair.
