2014 Spring Makeup Trends

2014 Spring Makeup Trends and How to Wear Them

You can’t stop them! These trends are coming. Whether you choose to get on the Spring Trend bus or not, you will be seeing these trends popping up all over. Some of the new spring trends are bold and bright. Other trends are trends we’ve seen before and love. Here are some of the new trends you’ll be seeing this spring and how to wear them.

Bright Orange Lips

One of this spring’s biggest trends is bright orange lips. This look is brilliant and bold. I never tire of these bold colored spring looks.

What you’ll need:

Matte Orange Lip Pencil and Matte Orange Lipstick

How to get this look:

The trick to pulling off this look is first to remember that when wearing bright colored lips, keep the eyes very neutral. The attention should be on the lips and wearing too dramatic of an eye look will make you look overdone.

First, use a lip liner to keep the lipstick from bleeding outside the lip line. Line the lips with an orange lip liner and fill them in. The other thing to ensure this look is wearable is to opt for a matte shade of orange lipstick. This looks best on all skin types. Wearing something too frosty will really throw off this chic look.

The Cat Eye

Get out your liquid liner, the cat eye is in! This spring the cat eye is especially big. I love this look and it never gets old. Whether you’re wearing dramatic eye shadow along with it or just by itself, this look is elegant.

What you’ll need:

Liquid Eyeliner or Gel Eyeliner and Eye Liner Brush

How to Get This Look:

Draw a thin line towards your brow that looks like an extension of your lower lash line. Line top lash line and connect the two lines. Fill in triangle.

Gilded Eye’s

This spring, eyelids covered in chunky, metallic glitters are in. The more sparkle and shine on the lid the better.  This look can be done a few different ways but let me give you the easiest way.

What you’ll need:

A brownish-black eye shadow, a medium brown eye shadow, glitter glue or glitter sealer and a metallic loose pigment.

How to Get This Look:

First, apply the medium brown eye shadow in the crease and to the entire lower eye lid. Using a crease brush, gently blend the brownish-black eye shadow in the crease. Apply, the glitter glue to the entire lower lid staying under the crease. Make sure you’re pressing this on with a brush or your finger rather than swiping it. Swiping the product on will disturb the eye shadow. Finally, apply the loose pigment to the lower part of the eyelid by pressing it to the lid.

A Pop of Green

A soft wash of chartreuse across the lid looks fresh when paired with an otherwise neutral face. This year pastels will be big and the heavy hitter is the soft green tones. This look is ever so popular.

What you’ll need:

A light brown eye shadow and a greenish-yellow eye shadow is all you'll need.

How to Get This Look:

First, apply the light brown eye shadow in the crease with a fluffy, dome shaped brush. This will blend it out and apply a small amount of color. You just want a subtle blend of color here. Just a couple shades darker than your skin tone. This neutral color will help neutralize the green.

Next, apply the green on the lid with sweeping motions to distribute and blend the color to appear like a soft wash.

Keep the rest of the face neutral to pull off this look. The look is supposed to look fresh and not “Malibu Barbie” like.

Berry Lips

This trend will never stop. It was in last fall and now it’s back. The berry lip will be eternal! Love this look.

What you’ll need:

A berry lip pencil such as Make Up For Ever #10C and a berry lipstick such as MAC’s Hang-Up or Loreal Colour Riche Lip Color in Blushing Berry.

How to Get This Look:

First, apply the lip pencil and fill in the lips. These bold looks tend to fade fast and bleed so this will help prevent that. Next, apply a couple coats of lipstick over the top.

This is another look that goes well with a neutral face. Less is more with these bold lips.

Blue Eyeshadow

Yes! I said blue eye shadow. Bold colors are in but this trend really threw me. This look that’s currently showing its colors is bright blue and from eye lid to crease. It’s brilliant but only if worn right.

What you’ll need:

A medium brown eye shadow and a brilliant, solid blue eye shadow. Make sure you’re using a primer underneath for color pay-off.

How to Get This Look:

First, apply an eye primer to get some good color payoff. You’ll want to apply it from lash to crease. Next, apply the medium brown to the crease with a big, fluffy dome shaped brush. This will ensure that you get a soft, disbursement of color. Next, apply the blue color to the lid with a shader brush by pressing the color onto the lid. Use a stiff, blending brush to blend out the crease. Stay in the crease while blending with windshield wiper motions. Moving up too high will make the look appear muddy. To even out the look you can apply some of the medium brown with a pencil brush to the lower lash line. A liner is optional.

Ethereal White Eyeshadow and Liner

The white eye makeup trend can be spotted all over the place. Versions of this vary with washes of iridescent whites and pinks that give skin a dewy glow.

What you’ll need:

All you'll need is a shimmery white or pink eye shadow such as MAC’s White Frost or Vanilla.

How to Get This Look:

This look is simple.  Just apply a soft, layer of eye shadow to the lid and crease. Don’t go too far up if the color is very light compared to your skin. If the color is not too much lighter, feel free to blend it to the brow. Try this with shimmery pinks, beige’s or even a cream shadow.

Glowing Skin

Glowing skin has been a trend for spring and summer for years and I must say it’s my favorite. As our skin matures this look gets harder to pull off. This can be done on anyone though. I love this innocent look that says, “And I didn’t even try…”

What you’ll need:

You'll need a sheer foundation, tinted moisturizer or either of these with a touch of radiance. Some great products would be the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation or the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer or Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer Illuminating.

There’s a bunch of new products hitting the market because of this trend. The newest ones are primers that have a radiant glow to them. You can put these on under your foundation or mix them in your foundation. I’ve heard some great reviews on the Burberry Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base but it’s quite pricey. For a lower price-point you could get the Laura Mercier Foundation Primer Radiance.

How to Get This Look:

This look can be achieved by applying a tinted moisturizer, sheer foundation or applying a glowy foundation primer underneath your foundation. I’ll be doing a video on this one because I love this look. Using all cream products will get you that all over glow and it’s perfect for summer at the beach too because all of the products are waterproof.

I love seasonal trends. You can never tell what each season will bring and I get really excited when looks evolve and change. I’ll be doing a video showing how to do a few of these trends so if you want more detail you can be keeping an eye out for that.
