Night Ritual For Aging Skin

The anti-aging night ritual should focus on combating the breakdown of collagen and weakening of elastin. The nightly ritual should also hydrate, firm and retexture skin for a more youthful appearance and fewer fine lines and wrinkles.

Cleanse

Cleansing is important to do both in the morning and at night. It will remove all the dirt, oil and debris. During the day our skin deals with environmental pollutants in the air which we need to cleanse away. We also need to rid our skin of our cosmetics, such as sunblock and our waterproof makeup.

Cleanse your face twice. This is called a double-cleanse. Our skin’s naturally sticky sebum is thick, slick, waxy and coats our skin by the middle of the day. 20 seconds can’t get through a layer of oil-based debris on the surface. The sebum is going to stay on the skin preventing our skin care products from doing their job. A cleanse is going to emulsify the debris, dirt and oil on our face but not truly take it off. This is why a double-cleanse is necessary. This is your secret to ultra, healthy, beautiful, clean skin.

For aging skin use a cleanser that smoothes texture while cleansing impurities. A cleanser geared towards this skin concern should provide clarity, brightness and improve cell-turnover by dissolving dead skin cell build up. It should also boost hydration and reduce irritation and inflammation.

Some great ingredients are salicylic, lactic and Glycolic Acids. These will exfoliate and smooth the texture of your skin. Vitamin E can condition, while soothing and calming skin.

Just use your fingers to massage the cleanser onto your face, neck and decolette. Then rinse with warm water and pat dry with a towel. Do this twice.

Tone

Use a toner to balance the PH of your skin before treating it. Products will penetrate at their fullest this way.

For aging skin, use a peptide toner that creates a hydrating, antioxidant shield over the skin to help reduce fine dryness lines and prevent the signs of aging. Your toner should firm, rehydrate and minimize skin-aging triggers.

Put the toner on a cotton pad and wipe on entire face, neck and décolleté. There are also toners that come in a spray bottle for easier application.

Treat

For your anti-aging treatment there is quite a wide variety of targeted treatments. There are masks, serums, creams and even peels. Your targeted treatment for at night should deliver a deep resurfacing of the skin to dramatically diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It should also hydrate to plump skin. Ideally your treatment would rebuild collagen too.

Some great ingredients would include Vitamin C to minimize multiple signs of aging, Hyaluronic Acid to increase hydration and Glycolic Acid to exfoliate for smoother, softer, healthier skin. Retinol can reduce the appearance of wrinkles by increasing cell turnover and improving skin resilience. Winged Kelp can smooth skin by fostering natural collagen and elastin.

There are also masks that can be used to intensely treat fine lines and wrinkles and really boost your treatment. Masks can deliver an ultra-replenishing, powerful dose of vitamins. They can increase elasticity, and boost collagen synthesis.

Some great ingredients would be Vitamins A, C, E and F which help skin recover from damage that leads to skin aging while enhancing barrier properties. Vitamin A helps increase elasticity and moisture content while Vitamin C and E help shield the skin from free radicals. Pro-Vitamin B5 can help nourish damaged skin.

There are also safe to use, at home resurfacing peels that can brighten and smooth. These peels can get rid of debris and exhausted cells to reveal youthful-looking skin.

Glycolic and Salicylic Acids can stimulate cell proliferation and Vitamin C can brighten skin.

I would recommend using a mask twice a week and a peel once a week followed by your toner to balance PH levels to prepare for proper product absorption. Then apply your nightly serum treatment.

Moisturize

For aging skin use a moisturizer that soothes and insulates skin against extreme environmental elements. A moisturizer that replenishes barrier lipids while moisturizing is ideal. Your moisturizer should also promote healthy cell turnover and prevent moisture loss.

A great ingredient to look for is Vitamin E which can improve the look, tone and texture of your skin and work against the signs of aging by fighting free radicals. Avocado, Sunflower and Olive Fruit Oils can enhance skin’s ability to retain maximum levels of hydration. Retinyl Palmitate and Shea Butter can improve texture and restore natural smoothness and softness.

Using fingers, apply to entire face, neck and décolleté.

Eye Treatment

An eye cream is an essential part of our skin care routine because that area of skin is different than the skin on the rest of our face. The skin on the eyes is a quarter of an inch thinner then on the rest of the face. This skin tends to become dry easier because of the lack of oil glands. This area also needs special products designed especially for that delicate area and it’s never too early to use an eye cream. This area is where we first start to see the signs of aging.

Our treatments that are meant for our face are not meant for the eye area. The ingredients have been measured for the skin on the face, not the thin skin on our eyes. The skin around our eyes needs a lower percentage of ingredients. Using a product on the eye area that's meant to treat the face can cause the eye area to dry out, swell or can even burn the skin in some cases.

Choose an eye cream that reduces the appearance of crow’s feet, improves skin firmness and illuminates the eye area for a more youthful appearance. The ideal eye treatment should increase collagen synthesis and increase intercellular water providing lost lasting hydration.

Some great ingredients to look for would be Hyaluronic Acid to increase hydration, Retinyl Palmitate to increase cell proliferation, Retinol and Vitamin C to increase cell turnover and fortify the skin.
